Review of The Archibald Paradox: A Strange Case of Authorship by Sylvia Lawson

Abstract

Sylvia Lawson's The Archibald Paradox is the most detailed account yet published of the life and work of J. F. Archibald, co-founder (though even that has been disputed), with John Haynes, of the Sydney Bulletin, editor of the Bulletin 1886 (or 1887) to 1902, a proprietor of the Bulletin for most of the period 1880 to 1914. The Archibald Paradox is also an essay about the genre of the Bulletin; in that essay Archibald's significance is largely metonymous: he signifies "his" paper.
