Abstract

The concept of 'world' or 'Commonwealth' literature has been seized on several times recently as a solution to the chronic problem of stitching separate patches of articles, lectures, and reviews into an apparently coherent book. The accepted scheme is to put the disparate pieces together with a few prefatory nods and becks towards commonality of language or interesting variety in social structure, or both.
