Abstract

Miles Franklin was an intriguing woman--iconoclastic, mischievous, determined to achieve her literary ambitions, committed to feminist views of marital relationships and women's rights, yet tormented within herself by contradictions which made her susceptible to fits of despair and long periods of literary sterility. Her years in America have long been seen as such a period.
