Review of The Poetical Works of Henry Kendall edited by T.T. Reed, and The Landscape of Australian Poetry by Brian Elliott

Abstract

In 1851 Arthur Hugh Clough was an applicant for the Chair of Classics in Sydney University. His application failed, and the appointment was given to John Woolley, who took notice of Harpur, and in 1861 gave Kendall guidance and encourage ment in his reading. One wonders whether the beginnings of Australian poetry might have been different if Clough had been appointed.
