Henry Lawson’s New Zealand Visits: A Comment

Abstract

Rollo Arnold's important and interesting essay on Henry Lawson's three visits to New Zealand (Australian Literary Studies, vol. 3, no. 3, May 1968) calls for some comment from one who has been over the same ground, less thoroughly in the case of the first visit and more thoroughly in the case of the third. I have in mind the needs of the scholar or future biographer of Lawson unable to decide between Mr Arnold's findings, where we differ, and those given in my book Henry Lawson Among Maoris, which was in press and beyond alteration when Mr Arnold's essay appeared.
